SUMMARY:The Tenements of Berlin: Prenzlauer Berg
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered about the history of Berlin’s old houses? Would you like to learn how to distinguish them? Then\, you might enjoy coming to this walk in a small group guided by an architect. \nWe will explore the general features of the Berlin tenements (rental apartment buildings) at their peak epoch\, from 1870 to 1910. We will do it in an introductory way\, covering architecture and urban design. Prenzlauer Berg is a great place for this exploration because it displays many beautiful tenements and both typical and particular cases. First\, a small historical contextualization is made\, and then we will go house-watching\, looking at the architectural features and seeing what they mean. You’ll get an idea of why the houses were built the way they did\, and how the older ones are different from the “newer” ones. You will also learn about what happened to these houses until today.  \nThis walk is more about understanding the everyday surroundings than quick-paced sightseeing\, and it was conceived having curious (new) Berliners in mind. It is part of an expanding set of walks about the Berlin tenements. For a more personalized experience\, the group has a limited size (typically 8 participants max)\, and any questions or discussions are very welcome. Hope you come soon! : ) \nOrganization:To check the available spots and book your own\, please visit the event page on the platform meetup.com\, the link is provided below. To register there\, an email-address and your first name are sufficient. Alternatively\, you can write me and ask for a reservation. The meeting point is on the higher plateau of the “Park am Wasserturm”. The stairs lie in front of the given address. I’ll be close to the tall\, thin tower. If you arrive a few minutes earlier\, there is the chance to chat a little before starting on time. We leave the park after a 10-min introduction. We end not far away\, near Prenzlauer Allee\, after walking 2.5 km. The duration is about 2h30\, depending on the number of discussions. The language is English\, though German is possible upon group request. The price is decided by you at the end of the walk\, between 14 and 18 EUR (cash\, bank card or PayPal\, receipts are available). If there are less than three guests or persistent rain\, I’ll cancel 2-3 hours in advance. Fore more details\, check practical information.

SUMMARY:The Tenements of Berlin: Kreuzberg
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to know why Kreuzberg was already a district with a unique character in 19th Century Berlin? Would you like to be able to identify the typical architectural arrangements in housing and industry that were born out of this special condition? Then\, you might enjoy coming to this walk in a small group guided by an architect. \nWe will explore the features of the tenements (rental apartment buildings) and factories in the oldest part of Kreuzberg\, especially in their intersection with urban design and economic and social aspects. We will see how the urban development of this area between 1860 and 1915 was different from Prenzlauer Berg. \nThis walk is more about understanding the everyday surroundings than quick-paced sightseeing\, and it was conceived having curious (new) Berliners in mind. It is part of an expanding set of walks about the Berlin tenements\, and although it is more specific (more focused\, more historical) than the one in Prenzlauer Berg\, it can be understood and enjoyed on its own. For a more personalized experience\, the group has a limited size (typically 7 participants max)\, and any questions or discussions are very welcome. Hope you can join in soon! \nOrganization:To check the available spots and book your own\, please visit the booking platform\, the website is provided below. To register there\, an email-address and your first name are sufficient.
