MK III: The Facade
The facade of Berlin Tenements is a very rich topic that can easily occupy a dedicated walk. For this we will travel to the south of Kreuzberg, to look at the houses around Chamisso Platz. This area boasts many well preserved facades where we can identify the most important elements of the typical ornamentation. We’ll also answer some related questions, for example why the dekoration is often exaggerated and why there are so many houses without decoration. It will be a good oportunity to refresh your knowledge about the architecture of antiquity!
MK IV: Spandauer Vorstadt
To understand how the architectural type of the Mietskaserne evolved, we have to visit the neighbourhood with the oldest preserved houses of berlin. You will be able to see the differences between the tenements of the 19th Century and the Houses of the 18th Century. You will also get a better picture how the housing conditions were in the these two centuries. We will spot many hidden gems and roam in unusually narrow streets for Berlin!
