In this first walk about the old Berlin tenements, we explore the general features of the Mietskaserne at its peak epoch, from 1870 to 1910. We do it in an introductory way, covering architecture and urban design. First, a small historical contextualization is made, and then we will go house-watching, looking at the features of the tenements and seeing what they mean. In the end, you will be able to identify architectural typologies, guess the approximate time of construction, or distinguish what is original from alterations.
Prenzlauer Berg is a great place for this exploration because it displays many beautiful tenement houses and typical and particular cases in the wider context of Berlin. It also serves as a window to what happened to the Mietskaserne in East Berlin during the Cold War. Did you know that these buildings were not really cherished until recent decades, being considered an inconvenient legacy?
We start at the landmark Wasserturm and end not far away, near Prenzlauer Allee. This walk has a more introductory character, so it is well suited to Berlin visitors as well.
